Gaaahhh… legacy computers…
Let it be said, that it should be standard practice to copy the i386 directory, or whatever directory the drivers exist on the orignal CD of Windows 98, to the hard drive so if you have to add a peice of hardware to an old computer you can add it without having to find an old copy of the Win98SE disk.
Write it down.

A better idea is to do the actual installation of Windows 98from the hard drive rather than the CD. Here’s a step by step of how to do so.
1) Back up any data you need to save.
2) Create a Windows 98 boot disk (from the Add/Remove Programs menu)
3) FDISK the hard drive into as many partitions as you need.
4) Format the hard drive.
5) Boot the system using the Win98 boot disk (make sure to choose CDROM support).
6) Copy the Win98 directory from the CD to the hard drive.
7) Reboot the system without the boot disk.
8) Enter the following command at the C:> prompt:
c:\win98\setup.exe
9) Complete the installation of Windows 98.
10) Install all your other programs and restore your data from backup.
11) Enjoy your clean Win98 installation.
This is what I (who used to work at Microsoft) called a “clean” installation. It’s the best thing you can possibly do because it keeps the memory clear of unnecessary programs and makes for an extremely fast install (about 12 minutes on a 486 DX2 133mhz).
Just my $0.02 worth.

Oops. I forgot to add that since the install was done this way, the installation path is c:\Win98. This means that you will never (or almost never) be asked for the Win98 CD.

Jep… amen to that…
the problem is the install wasn’t done ‘this way’, it was done the M$ way… gahh…
end result, the computer can’t be networked as is until I find a Win98SE CD (got any lying around?)
And I can’t move files from the old PC to the new PC, until that happens.
Which needs to happen before Tuesday.
*sigh*

Actually, Jon, I do. It’s right here in my CD case...In the truck. LOL.
Sorry, chief.

zee work, she is done.
I copied the cd to one directory on the network.
Soon, the two old computers will be given away or something.
